little traditions
the next couple of posts are going to be all about birthdays and traditions as that's what's been on my mind lately. so forgive me in advance.
it is so nice to bring the rhythm of the year and the seasons into the home. this year we set up francesca's birthday ring in elodie's room and combined it with our nature table. we mark each new season by creating a little shelf with bits and pieces of nature. we put away our shells and ephemera from summer and make way for autumn. we've collected leaves and acorns and a little piece of corn from our trip to the harvest festival in utah and decorated the shelf and ring with candles and woodland creatures. we also got a cinnamon broom from trader joes that smells so nice.
for the birthday ring, i chose the symbol of a moon for francesca's first year as she was born under a full moon. elodie has been deciding what symbol she will get when she turns five. it's been a major discussion over her which i think is so sweet. i would choose a heart as she leads in the world with her big smile and her heart but i think she will choose a flower. equally lovely.
we also recite little seasonal nursery rhymes that i learned in francesca's waldorf class and that elodie knew from her preschool music class.
five little pumpkins
five little pumpkins sitting on a gate.
the first one said, "oh my it's getting late."
the second one said, "there are witches in the air."
the third one said, "but we don't care!"
the fourth one said, "let's run and run and run."
the fifth one said, "I'm ready for some fun!"
then OOOhh went the wind
and out went the lights
and the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.
hippity hop;
up he goes

the squirrel
whisky, frisky,

whirly, twirly,
round and round,
fown he scampers
to the ground.
furly, curly
what a tail!
tall as a feather
broad as a sail!
where's his supper?
in the shell.
(clap your hands together and drop some acorns)
snappity, crackity,
out it fell.
