first spring
yesterday we took our evening walk. elodie picked orange blossoms, jasmine, wisteria, and bottle brush for her haphazard bouquet. the shadows were long and the air was as clear as february. from the mountains you could see all the way to the ocean. most importantly, this is your first spring francesca. your first time hearing the doves in the trees. your first time feeling this heady wind filled with the smell of orange blossoms and the skunk that sprayed our neighbor's dog. your first time seeing the sun shift in the sky. the light is still cold but the hues will become warmer as the days pass.
at five months your little fingers examine the tiniest speck of lint on the couch. you are starting to reach for my plate. i can tell you are almost ready for your first taste of avocado, sweet potatoes, or spring peas. we can prop you up like a tripod for a moment, you look so pleased seeing the room from this new view. you hold my face with both of your hands and draw me in to your sweet smell. i am overwhelmed when i have you near. your milky mouth next to mine and hands holding tightly onto my cheeks. my favorite song to sing you right now is
. i sang it to your sister when she was your age. there is nothing more fitting.
we call you rosebud, frankie, francesca, my alma. everyone notices your sweet countenance. so peaceful, like a prayer. this is your spring time. you are spring time. the earth is waking up to welcome you. i love you francesca. i love you more than every day.
